When I first saw our beautiful old home in this fabulous location, I decided that ‘this was it’.
Built originally as a single four-room cottage (1862) and then extensively extended in 1880 for a ship Captain and his family, the house at number 2 Ferguson St. has also been a nunnery, a brothel, accommodation flats and administration offices – all part of its rich history!
We spent years renovating, restoring and refurbishing and we’re delighted that our guests love what has been done. Most people comment on how much larger it is than it looks from the street and ‘what a lovely feel’ the home has when they walkthrough.
The beds are all new and very comfortable with beautiful linen, fresh flowers, digital TV’s etc. – all things to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
CAPTAINS RETREAT | WILLIAMSTOWN
Just one door from the water and walking distance to restaurants, shops and yacht clubs, Captain’s Retreat is a beautifully renovated and refurbished Victorian building in a fabulous location.
This charming old home has a somewhat chequered history, with many visitors over the years recalling its different uses ranging from a grand old private home through to a nunnery, brothel, Doctor’s surgery, honeymoon flats and a boarding house that was home at one stage to a total of 21 adults and 18 children at the same time. It is a big house, but that was a lot of people! Today the owners have opened it up and added en-suites etc. so that there are only six guest rooms or suites and so a maximum of six singles or six couples.
It now boasts beautiful, stylish decor and all six guest-rooms have very comfortable beds, ensuite bathrooms (3 have spas) digital televisions, three guest rooms have classic-style gas fireplaces, and one suite even has its private lounge room and private balcony.
The garden is a tranquil walled oasis with a prolific orange tree in season and both a lemon and cumquat tree that fruit all year round. A huge Balinese style double door installed into the large, 2-storey high wall creates a stunning focal point in a private oasis. The garden is edged by a mix of forest pansy and columnar pear trees which create a wonderfully lush, cool screen throughout summer a, delightful and showy display of colour through autumn and a surprise view over the rooftops to the Westgate bridge in the distance through the winter. The back area is so private and secluded that you could think you were somewhere else in the world – but also that guests have been known to sit on the sunny deckchairs in the middle of winter.

Palana Beach House has two very comfortable queen size bedrooms that are attached to the main house by an external undercover walkway. It has a large open living area which is clad in beautiful celery top pine timber on the internal walls and ceiling, making for a warm, comfortable environment.
We have furnished the house to ensure all modern comforts are on hand. There is an excellent hotplate BBQ outside. Modern conveniences allow cooking with ease as well as the domestics (fridge, bread making machine, all cooking utensils to make a delicious home cooked meal, washing machine, etc.).
You can relax, read a book and sip a red wine on the deck whilst marvelling at the ocean and the Inner and Outer Sister Islands just off the coast. Time, and worries of the rest of the world, will melt away as the serenity of this beautiful location captures you. At night the wallabies come to do the lawn mowing quietly. During the day, you often see echidnas wandering in the garden and sea eagles flying low over the front deck looking for their next meal.
