Choosing a new doctor can be a challenge, especially if you have moved to a new community. Asking for recommendations from co-workers, neighbours, and friends is a good way to start, but you will have to decide which doctor is best suited to your needs and situation.
You will need to decide what type of doctor you are looking for. Most plans require you to choose a primary care doctor (a doctor who will manage your overall care and refer you to specialists when needed). If you have a chronic or disabling condition, you will likely need a specialist who understands your particular health needs.
Some strategies and resources can still help you find a new doctor or check up on one you already have. Here’s why it’s so important to find a good primary care doctor, what to focus on in your search, and where to go for the information you need. South Yarra Medical
9820 1144
South Yarra Medical, Hawthorn Medical and Richmond Medical were founded by Dr Dan Moylan and Dr Luke Holden. They have been long term friends since studying medicine together at Monash University. Dan and Luke continue to own and operate the clinics. Such doctor involvement is becoming less common with the widespread corporatisation of General Practice.
South Yarra Medical was formed in 2007, Richmond Medical was established in 2009, and Hawthorn Medical opened in 2016. The focus has always been to provide an excellent level of healthcare – to the level they would wish for their own friends and family.
Another priority has been to provide the clinic’s GPs with industry-leading facilities and working conditions. Consequently, they have been able to attract the most highly skilled and friendly doctors available to join the team. The clinics are also involved in the training program for General Practice Registrars.

Our History
William Street Clinic was established in 1982 by Dr Harry Imber and Dr Kaz Czuba, both highly experienced General Practitioners (GPs) with specialist registration.
Over the past 38 years, Harry and Kaz gained a solid reputation by providing excellent medical care to patients who work and/or live in and around the city.
Based on trust and respect, Harry and Kaz steadily built a strong, loyal and dedicated patient base that today still reflects many long-term and well-established relationships. Our welcoming receptionist Enza joined William Street Clinic over 35 years ago. Her warm and professional style ensures all patients are managed in a respectful and timely manner.
In September 2019, Kaz retired from William Street Clinic, leaving behind a wonderful legacy that he, Harry and Enza established through their commitment to exemplary service, which will continue long into the future.
Following Kaz’s departure, Harry and Enza welcomed the team Dr Meridee Flower and Professor Leon Piterman. They are well supported by the clinic’s nurse practitioners Rachel Primmer, Karen Tuttleby and Jacinta Cooke, all of whom now attend to the professional care of the practice’s patients.
William Street Clinic uses Best Practice medical software, ensuring the efficient and secure management of our patient database.

7 Signs You Should See a Doctor
Knowing when to see a doctor can sometimes be a hard decision. There are some common health symptoms that typically don’t warrant an appointment, such as a runny nose or cough that’s been going on a few days, and others that could signal a more serious condition. But how can you tell the difference?
A good rule of thumb is if your symptoms have been going on for more than two weeks, it’s a sign to see a doctor. You should never ignore some symptoms, such as bleeding that won’t stop or difficulty breathing.
If you have minor symptoms and can’t make it out of the house for an in-person visit, many doctors are available for telehealth visits, in which you call or hop on a video chat to discuss your symptoms. Here are sometimes when it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor, seek treatment at urgent care, or call for emergency help.
To Establish Your Health Risk
Does your family have a history of diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, or another significant disease? If so, you may be at risk for these conditions, too—and there are likely things you can do to lower that risk. A doctor can help you find out and work with you to determine which screening tests you need.
To Keep Your Body in Check
Do you ever wonder how you went from wearing a size 6 to a size 10 in what seems like the blink of an eye, but what was really for months or years? Many of my new patients who haven’t seen a doctor in years are shocked when they step on the scale and learn that they have gained 20-plus pounds since they were last weighed. And even if you still fit into your skinny jeans, other health markers, like heart rate and blood pressure, should be trended over time. A routine doctor’s visit can be like a system of checks and balances for your body by monitoring basic vital signs.
To Keep Your Mind in Check
Did you know that being a female is an independent risk factor for depression—and that women are more than twice as likely as men to struggle with depression over the course of their lifetime? What’s more, we aren’t always great at noticing the symptoms ourselves. A routine mental health screening by your physician can help identify warning signs—before they go from bad to worse.
To Get a Good Night’s Sleep
According to the NIH, 30-40% of Americans report having occasional insomnia symptoms and 10-15% report chronic difficulty sleeping—with women representing the majority of those affected. While you may think that a poor night’s sleep just means you’ll need an extra cup of coffee in the morning, chronic sleep disorders can increase the long-term risk of hypertension, depression, and diabetes. A doctor’s visit can help identify possible underlying causes for your restless nights—and get you the help you need to get some zzzs.
To Make Sure Your Cervix is Healthy
While I’ll be the first to admit that a trip to the gynecologist’s office isn’t my favourite way to spend an afternoon, annual pelvic exams are a critical part of any woman’s preventative health care. They can help detect vaginal infections, including sexually transmitted diseases (which may not present with any symptoms), and may often include a PAP smear for cervical cancer screening.
To Get Peace of Mind
When we have health questions and concerns, it’s easy to turn to good ol’ WebMD for answers. And even though the Internet can be a wonderful health resource, reading about your health issues online can often lead to unnecessary worry and fear. Remember, you (and every other patient) are unique and deserve a personalised evaluation. So instead of surfing the web for a generic, or even worse, incorrect answer, talk to a doctor in person to get the full picture—and to stop losing sleep over your questions (see reason number 5!).
For Prevention, Prevention, Prevention
Does it seem like I am repeating myself? Good! Health protection and prevention is the key to staying healthy for the long haul. From simple blood tests and vaccines now to mammograms and colonoscopies later, your doctor can help you become the healthiest version of yourself. Although it may seem like a hassle now, one hour in a doctor’s office now can add years of health to your life.
Most people don’t go to the doctor unless they’re sick or have a problem. But you should start by seeing your doctor when you’re well. By seeing your doctor routinely, you can stay on top of your health. He or she can provide preventive health screenings and monitor your health over time. This allows them to catch diseases early and help you manage them before they progress into more serious conditions.
How often you routinely see your doctor depends on your health. Many doctors recommend you come in once a year for a check-up. But if you have problems or a chronic condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, you will likely be seen more often.
When deciding whether to call the doctor when you’re experiencing symptoms, you should also consider the state of your health and any risk factors you may have. For example, if you have asthma and get a respiratory infection, you may need to see your doctor sooner than someone who doesn’t have asthma. Besides, if you’re having new symptoms after having a procedure, surgery, immunisation, injection, or starting a new medicine, you should call your doctor.
