Whether you’re a new pet owner or have owned several pets for years, it’s a good idea to select a veterinarian before you need one. This way, you’ll be working with someone with who you feel comfortable and who seems to have a good rapport with your pet rather than a vet who is simply nearby, open, or listed first in the Yellow Pages.
Choosing the right veterinarian for your dog is something that you should carefully consider. This is the person that could potentially save your pet’s life and keep them healthy. Both and your pet should come to a consensus about this person before you make a long-term commitment to work with them.
To help you get started looking for the best vet for your pet, we’ve rounded up our favourite veterinary clinics right across Yarra Valley, Melbourne.

We’re so happy to see happy smiling faces & wagging tails back in the clinic after our recent lockdown. COVID has played havoc with our lives, but thankfully we are still able to provide your pets with the love and attention they deserve.
Despite being allowed to remain open, we have had to re-introduce some COVID safe measures to help us stay open. These measures include:
Consultations – Consultations will take place within the clinic!! When you arrive for your appointment, please call the clinic to let us know you’re here, and we will invite you in. This is to ensure we don’t exceed the maximum number of people allowed in the clinic at one time.
Hand Sanitiser – Hand sanitiser will be available for your use at the reception desk. Please help us stay safe & use sanitiser when entering the clinic.
Limit of one person per consultation – This will allow us to successfully maintain 4 sqm per person whilst inside the clinic. If we need a nurse to help during the consultation, we may need to ask you to wait outside the consultation room. If this does occur, it would only be for a short period of time.
Limited numbers of clients in the reception area – once again, to maintain 4 sqm per person, we will be limiting the number of people in the reception area to a maximum of 10. We have dedicated seats for everyone to ensure the 1.5m social distancing requirements are maintained.
Buying Food or Medications – you are very welcome to enter the clinic to purchase food or medication, but we need to maintain a maximum of four people in the reception area. If a reception is full, please wait outside until it is clear to enter.
Online Shop – We also have a convenient online store for all food, supplements & treats. We will contact you when your order is ready, so all you need to do is turn up to the clinic & collect them.
We understand that COVID-19 has had an enormous effect on how we live our lives & how we interact with people. To continue to allow us to keep our doors open, we would greatly appreciate your co-operation with the measures we have put in place.
Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre
03 9751 2990
“To be the veterinary leader, providing platinum standard pet care with integrity and compassion for our pet families.”
The veterinary centre was opened in beautiful Olinda, in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, on 26th July 1999 by owners Moss and Christine Siddle. At the time of opening, there was one vet – Moss Siddle and one veterinary nurse – Elissa Taylor (now Roberts).
The original site was at 2 Basin-Olinda Rd, Olinda and was chosen for its exact central location in the Dandenong Ranges. Previously, the building was used as a hardware and lawnmower shop. There was a fire causing the hardware shop to close, and it never re-opened. This site was perfect for the first few years, but ultimately, more room was needed, and hence the surgery has now moved into the main street. The old site is now the LeafBusters distribution centre.
The new Veterinary Centre is located in spacious surroundings at 1449 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, Olinda (besides the Mt Dandenong Hotel). Moss and Christine decided to settle in the Dandenong Ranges with their family after years of travel around the world. Originally from Mackay in Queensland, Moss has worked in over 15 different veterinary clinics in Australia and overseas but loves the people and idyllic surroundings of the Dandenongs.

With clear communication and our embrace of technology, we keep our clients informed about what is happening with their pets as well as what is happening in the world of veterinarians.
Our Clinic
Our clinic is just as cozy as it is fun and dynamic. We have made a conscious effort to make our waiting area as interesting, interactive and comfortable as possible, rather than a boring old waiting room with a line of chairs against a wall.
We also have a big open floor-plan behind-the-scenes, which allows for quick and easy movement amongst staff, ensuring that whatever needs doing gets done.
We pride ourselves on our unique floorplan, which was custom-designed for us when we renovated the building. While we may seem like a house converted into a clinic on the outside, we are anything but.
We highly recommend taking a look through our 3-D tour below for a unique look at what it looks like behind the doors that you usually only have a glimpse through.

Boronia Veterinary Clinic and Hospital
03 9762 3177
Welcome to Boronia Veterinary Clinic & Hospital
The Boronia Veterinary Clinic and Hospital has been in existence for more than 40 years and under current ownership for greater than 35 years.
With over 20 veterinarians on staff, we are one of the largest companion pet only veterinary hospitals in Melbourne. This has allowed us to offer a broad range of services and expertise, uncommon in other veterinary clinics. We continue to work at providing the broadest range of options possible for our clients.
Our philosophy is firmly rooted in the principle of providing as many options for clients as possible but understanding that the “right” option in any situation is not always the most advanced option.
The consulting clinic offers extended opening hours (Mon-Sat 7 am-9 pm and Sun and Public Holidays 9 am-8 pm), and our inpatient hospital provides round-the-clock care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Most general practices are not able to staff their inpatient hospital 24 hours or overnight.
We hope the information on this site will hopefully serve as an introduction to our hospital and our philosophy.
How to choose the best veterinarian?
Choosing the right veterinarian for your dog is something that you should carefully consider. This is the person that could potentially save your pet’s life and keep them healthy. Both and your pet should come to a consensus about this person before you make a long-term commitment to work with them.
Choosing a veterinarian is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your cat or dog. Your veterinarian will be an essential partner for you in making sure your pet lives a long, healthy life. Think about the issues that are important to you, like the clinic’s hours and location. Knowing your preferences ahead of time will help you narrow down your choices.
When Should I Find a Vet?
The best time to find a vet is before you need one. Ideally, you’ll choose a vet before you bring home your pet, and some offices can even help you find the best pet for your family.
If you’re moving, you should look for a vet as soon as possible. Don’t wait until your dog or cat needs a vet before you start looking for one. You don’t want to have to deal with the stress of finding a vet if your pet is sick or injured.
How Do I Find a Vet?
Word of mouth is often the best way to find a vet. Ask your friends and family for recommendations. Online reviews can be helpful, but suggestions from people you trust are even better. Different pets and families have different needs, though, so consider meeting with a few vets before making your choice.
You can also check with your state’s veterinary medical association for a list of qualified veterinarians or search the American Animal Hospital Association to locate accredited veterinary practices. If you’re moving, your current vet may be able to make recommendations.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a veterinarian
Ask for personal recommendations
One of the best ways to find the right veterinarian is to ask your friends and family members for recommendations. Other families with pets in your area may know some good veterinarians to check out, so that should be the first place you look for advice.
Find a veterinarian with expertise in treating dogs
Veterinarians are not all created equal. Different types of veterinarians specialise in working with different types of animals, and some of them may have more experience treating cats, rabbits, or other types of non-canine animals. You will want to work with a veterinarian who has expertise in treating dogs specifically, so ask about how much experience they have with dogs before you get started.
Look for licensed personnel
Although most people would assume this would be a given, that is not always the case. Make sure that the veterinarian really is licensed in your state and also see if some of the other workers are licensed because there are also registered veterinary technicians. You can ask to see their licenses or contact your state board of veterinary medicine for more information.
Inquire about their approach to pets and medicine
A veterinarian is not just there to administer medication but to provide care for the entire being. Vets tend to have different approaches when it comes to pets and medication. Have a brief discussion with your potential vet and see what they think about wellness and prevention issues for dogs. If they are not on the same page with you, then you should keep looking.
Consider the cost and location
If an emergency situation occurs, you will need to quickly get to the vet’s office. Try to find a veterinarian that is less than an hour away from you at the most. Costs can also vary depending on the vet, so see if their prices fit into your budget before you commit to them.
Both you and your pet should be comfortable
Being comfortable around your veterinarian is important because you should tell them everything about your dog. The same thing applies to your dog because they should also feel at ease around the vet. Some initial discomfort around a vet can be normal for some dogs, but signs of anger, fear, or distress toward a vet is certainly a red flag that you should move on.
Look for a clean facility
Have a look around the facility and notice the level of cleanliness. If the place seems a little dingy or dirty, then that is also a sign of moving on. Since it is a medical facility, it should be just as clean as a hospital for humans.
Personal referrals are a great way to start the search, but you should still spend some time to get to know the vet and staff first. Ask about their background and experience, and then see if they hold views similar to yours on medical treatments for pets. Make sure that both you and your pet are comfortable with the vet and facility. The veterinarian will play a significant role in your pet’s life, so keep looking until you find the right one.
