During Dinner Hour
As you and your guests are eating dinner, you can expect the DJ to play background music, but don’t expect the music to be too loud because the DJ understands that guests will likely be talking to one another. If they were playing music too loudly, then people wouldn’t be able to hear each other. So instead, you can expect instrumental music to play, such as piano, jazz, or classical tunes.
Open The Dance Floor Up
Eventually, the DJ will open the dance floor up, which means they will play songs throughout the rest of the night. You can provide them with a list of songs you want to be played, and the DJ will play them, but he will probably mix them. Don’t worry, though, because a professional will ensure everything goes smoothly and no tracks skip or sound horrible.
Last Song
When hiring a wedding DJ, you can expect them to play one final song specifically for the newlyweds. After that, the song they’ll play is up to the couple, or they can let the DJ choose. Afterwards, the DJ will thank everyone for having him, and then he’ll leave for the night.
In some cases, the best use of space can be obtained if the kit is set up in the corner rather than, as is more typical, across the length of one wall. Corner set-ups will utilise a corner of the room and come across at around a 30 or 45degree angle. In this case, most DJs will ask for a minimum ideal corner giving around 12-13ft / 4m of frontage and extending out around 9ft / 3m along each wall from the corner of the room.
If the space you intend for a DJ to set up in is less than these minimum guidelines, he’d like to know about this in advance.
If the venue is tiny, a tried and tested method of making the Disco as small as possible is to set the decks up, so the decks (and DJ) are facing the wall rather than the crowd.
This means a DJ can sometimes get away with a space as small as about 6 to 9ft / 2 to 3m long by 2 to 3ft / less than a meter from the wall out!
Please also remember that if you’re hiring a dance-floor, your DJ will need to set up off of and behind this. So ask the people putting in your dance-floor to leave room between the wall and dance-floor for the DJ to set up.
One final thing to remember is headroom. A ‘normal’ set-up will require around 7ft / 2m of headroom (and sometimes more) for the kit to go up on stands. This is worth considering if there are any limitations to headroom or if the set-up is to take place in a room (especially something like a marquee) with a sloping roof.
Place your DJ next to the dance floor.
While you may not have opted for an interactive DJ, there is still a level of interaction required with any Wedding DJ, even if it is just basic announcements and directing your guests on where to look for the next formality.
One of the best skills your DJ should have is the ability to read a crowd that is on the dance floor. Reading a crowd & their reactions to the songs being played helps the DJ continue to curate an awesome set to keep your guests on the floor the rest of the evening.
If the DJ is too far from the dance floor or, worse yet, can’t see it, you are limiting their ability to provide an amazing experience for you and your guests, not to mention the energy disconnect between the DJ and the crowd.
Some DJs take requests, and some don’t. We leave this one up to our clients. We’ll talk to our couples and ask them what they want us to do. Some say they want us to take requests, and some say they don’t. Even if they tell us to take requests, we are always very careful never to play something similar to a song that might have been listed on the do not playlist.
Also, we use our judgment when it comes to requests. If it’s a great song, sure, we will play it. We’ll stay away from it if it’s a song we know will clear the dance floor. The DJ’s goal is the same as the couple that hired them. DJs want the dance floor filled with people as much as possible!

The Evoke Entertainment Story
To tell such a story, we must wind the clock back to 2007-2008. The lead vocalist of our number one event band, ‘Let’s Groove Tonight’ and CEO Chris Ninni found himself frustrated and disappointed with the quality of the Sydney cover band scene. You see, Chris was a hired hand, the fill-in or feature artist many acts and clients would request for a particular event. This is a great position to be in, except for one fact, every night, Chris found himself working with new musicians in new configurations that simply weren’t meeting his own personal expectations. Don’t get me wrong, these musicians were all fantastic, but as a band, they were weak, disjointed and deeply uninspiring. Driving home from every performance, Chris constantly pondered the notion “there has to be a better way”, and so in 2009, “Let’s Groove Tonight” was born.
Early 2009 Chris was on a mission to band together with the finest like-minded musicians Sydney had to offer. The goal was clear, the crystal, in fact. “Let’s Groove Tonight” was going to go against the grain and deliver a product like no other for the Australian scene. The days of throw together lineups were numbered. This is a new beast, one with a consistent lineup that performs together week in, week out. A band that is truly a band. One that can reflect its individual qualities yet react as one.
