One of the first details to sort out is who will be controlling the playlist on your big day. This may be a DJ, band or combination of both. Some people choose to use live musicians for their ceremony but opt for a DJ at their reception. Others choose to have a DJ all the way through. It’s up to you, but whatever you choose will affect your bottom line and song choices. Keep in mind that some bands will only play in their genre while DJs are more open to variety.
Gather inspiration
Start your search by looking for some musical inspiration. Watch wedding videos on YouTube, rent a couple of rom coms or search Spotify for love playlists. You may find some hidden gems you would never have known about.

Prelude
The prelude music will be one of your guests’ first notices at your wedding. Generally, prelude music is light background music played while guests are being seated. Processional
The processional song is played while the wedding party enters the ceremony. This also includes parents and grandparents. Traditionally, instrumental music is played during this time. Though, if you wanted to switch things up, you could have a professional “The Office” style!
Bridal Processional
“Here comes the bride…!” This is the moment you have been waiting for. The moment where everyone will gasp at the bride’s beauty and marvel at the look on the groom’s face. Choose a bridal processional song that will highlight your arrival at the ceremony.
Recessional
The recessional song is played when you exit the ceremony as husband and wife. This song should be happy and lively! While this can also be an instrumental song, it is becoming more popular to have a fun recessional song or even a dance routine! I recommend my favourite – Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder.
Reception Entrance
The party has arrived! The reception entrance song is played when you…enter the reception. (I know that was a tough one to figure out.) So to start the reception with a bang and choose a-rockin' entrance song!
First Dance
Your first dance as a couple can be a very sentimental moment. So if you have a song that is already your favourite or ‘your song’, this can be a great pick for a first dance. If not, brainstorm some of your favourite songs at the moment and listen to the lyrics to see if any of them stand out.
Father/Daughter Dance
Parent dances usually follow the first dance at the reception. A father-daughter dance song should be sweet and sentimental! No matter what, you’ll always be your daddy’s little girl.
Mother/Son Dance
While mother-son dances can also be soft and slow, they can also be fast and upbeat! A swing dance, foxtrot, or waltz between a groom and his mom will awe all the guests.
The Party-Starter
Everybody report to the dance floor – it’s time to get the party started! Every reception needs that song that will get everyone out of their seats to bust a move. So pick one of your all-time favourites as a couple.
The Last Song
Before you run through a sea of sparklers, glow sticks, or bubbles, end the reception on a good note and play one of your favourite songs. The last song will give everyone one last chance to show off their dance moves.
Some are cheesy. Some are inappropriate. Some are downright ugly. And none of them should be played at your wedding. Hopefully, your DJ or band is savvy enough to avoid this tripe. Just in case, though, give him this list to make sure you avoid embarrassment. Is this list exhaustive? Nope. There’s plenty of other junk out there. It should be enough, however, to give your DJ a sense of your style and inform the rest of his choices:

There’s no direct answer to this question because every venue and wedding is different. But here are some rules of thumb:
- Assuming that the load is reasonably straightforward and the distance to carry the equipment is not too great, it takes about 45-50 minutes to set up.
- Once set up, it takes around 20-25 minutes to soundcheck the band and set levels for the different instruments.
Factors That Affect These Times
Sometimes Carte Blanche is booked as a bigger band – an 8 or a 9 piece. Having a bigger band means more equipment to carry and set up – and more time needed to soundcheck.
The other factor that has the biggest effect on set up time is the physical distance from where we can unload our vehicles to where we will be performing.
Set up times for a live band like Carte Blanche can vary from event to event. However, as a rule of thumb, 65/70 minutes is a good amount to set the equipment up and perform a thorough sound check.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s débuted in 2008 at the Monet exhibition’s opening for the Art Gallery of NSW, Australia. Since then, we’ve headlined successive opening nights of the annual Sydney Italian Film Festival and the Australian Golf Open, performed at the Australian Museum, the NSW Museum of Contemporary Art, the Mint, the Opera House Marquee, held residencies in several classy bars and cafes around Sydney and were regular on the Saturday night bill at the Park Hyatt Hotel (Rocks, Sydney).

We’ve been a pro live band in Sydney, regional NSW and interstate for 12 years. Our huge repertoire of over 500 songs covers Jazz, French, Latin, lounge, soul, blues, classic and contemporary pop and dance tunes in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German and Hindi.
The heart of our music lies in the perfect marriage of guitar and vocals. Singer/songwriter Niyati Libotte honed her skills in France’s jazz haunts, and award-winning guitarist Gavin Libotte hails from fiery Latin jazz fusion band Urban Gypsies. Chriso has been performing at weddings, corporate gigs and private parties for well over a decade as a soloist and part of small to large bands; thus, he has sufficient experience to know that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to clients’ entertainment needs. However, the three musicians featured in his Trio have most bases covered between them.
Chriso performs as a solo guitar/vocalist, with the wonderful point of difference that he is a truly amazing saxophonist. As a soloist, he switches between guitar & vocals and playing sax/singing over pre-recorded backings. He has an impressively wide-ranging repertoire from Jazz & swing to Top 40 and classic hits. Of course, backings aren’t anything like as good as actual musicians… but they get the job done when space or budget is limited.
His Duo lineup adds a bassist/guitarist and backing vocalist. The duo essentially has two unique lineups available: Saxophone & Guitar, where they specialise in classy renditions of popular tunes (with the option of sticking to jazz standards if that’s your thing); or guitar/vocals and bass/vocals, opening up all the usual guitar/vocal repertoire with the added benefit of bass & harmonies.
The Trio adds a drummer & percussion – and, like the duo, is essentially two bands in one. The drummer plays Cajon (hand percussion) for the quieter sets where Chris and bassist stick to guitar and sax; for a bigger, more typical covers band sound, they go to vocals, guitar, bass and drums; this is the lineup for performing dance sets to crowds large or small.
Chriso, a brilliant performer in his own right, deliberately handpicked his musicians for the trio years ago in the knowledge that they’re the best in the biz at what they do and, like Chriso, they’re also a delight to work with!
