Why Are Wedding Photos Important?

Planning a wedding can be hectic: wedding dress, bridesmaids’ dresses, venue, reception, food, music, guests’ list… And then you have to decide whether you should hire a professional wedding photographer or not. Why not use pictures taken by friends or relatives? After all, photographs may not be your top priority. The most important thing is to enjoy the day.

It’s okay to wonder: are wedding photographs so important? Is it worth spending money on them when you are already paying for everything else? And if it’s worth it, can’t you opt for a cheaper alternative, like using the photos your guests take?

Each person has a handful of milestone events in their life that should be captured in photos. As children, these events include our first steps, our first day of school, our first time riding a bicycle, our first school dance and graduating from high school. However, as adults, two of the most significant milestones in our lives often occur: Getting married and having children.

Ask most people what their most important photographs are, and they will likely tell you it’s their wedding photos. Your wedding ceremony is a momentous occasion, and you’ll want to remember it forever. This is because pictures of the wedding are so important!

How Important Is Wedding Photography?

If having perfectly captured memories of your day isn’t essential, then you don’t have to spend that much, or you could get a friend to do it or your Uncle Jim. Heck, you can give all your guests cameras, and they can shoot the day for you. It’ll be fun, but we don’t necessarily advocate this. As a former wedding photographer myself, I can tell you a lot of hard work goes into capturing the story and emotions of your wedding day that you will cherish forever. Like any other skilled profession, it requires a lot of hard work, dedication and ability. It’s not as easy as you think, and you can’t just pick up a camera and do it. But, you’ll only get married once, and the wedding photography will make those memories last a lifetime. Then, you can show them to your children and your children’s children, and let’s face it, even the postman.

There will be nothing left after your big day is over, the wedding dress will be packed away in the attic, the flowers will be thrown, you will want to have as many keepsakes as you possibly can to remind you of that beautiful and very fleeting day.

When you look back at your photos in ten years, tears will be rolling down your cheeks as you see the smile on your dad’s face as he gave you away, the tears in your mum’s eyes as she watches you say your vows, and the head of your husband in his hands as his best man digs up all the dirt on him. A good wedding photographer will capture these moments without hesitation, even your grandmother breaking out her moves on the dance floor after a few too many drinks will be there to see, every moment captured beautifully.

What makes images powerful?

While your wedding day only lasts for a few hours, you will want to remember it for years to come. You will like to share it with your friends, relatives, children, and grandchildren.

Wedding photographs aren’t just images that you, as a couple, will keep for yourself. Instead, they are photographs that will be passed down through generations.

That is why photographs have always played an essential role in our lives: they connect us to our past. They remind us of people and places. But, most importantly, they let us relive our feelings and share our stories with others.

Wedding photographs don’t capture things but emotions.

Wedding photographs will allow you to relive the entire day as many times as you wish: from the morning preparations right up to the goodbye hug of your last guest. These pictures will tell the beautiful story of your wedding and let you look back and remember your wedding day.

A wedding photographer is not just an expert in technical matters. But, crucially, she knows that she’s not there to capture things. Instead, her technical skills will help her in her actual work—to capture emotions and immortalize special moments.

The most memorable moments are fleeting ones: the groom anxiously waiting for the bride, the happiness when they exchange their “first look,” the pride in the parents’ eyes… what guest would be able to capture those?

Wedding photographs capture details.

Wedding photographs will also capture every detail you will unavoidably miss during your wedding day.

Your wedding day will fly by. Everyone will want to talk to you, to share in on your happiness. But, unfortunately, many brides hardly find the time to eat something, let alone notice small things like their grandmother’s earrings, the ones she had promised to wear on your wedding day.

When you have invested so much time and money into designing and putting together your wedding day, you want to relive the experience at your leisure, taking in all the small things you were too busy to appreciate during the event.

Wedding photographs capture people.

Your wedding is a rare opportunity for you to have all your friends and relatives together.

In everyday life, it is just impossible to keep in touch with everybody. It’s even harder to bring everybody together at the same time when everyone you love and care for surrounds you, these rare and blessed moments cannot be missed!

Let your photographer know the types of shots you would like, the locations, and who you want a picture with. Getting various family and friends together for group shots is challenging, but that’s what your wedding photographer is there for.

And, of course, that these photographs can be given to those close relatives and friends as a special gift to remember your wedding day and keep sharing in your joy for years to come. That’s where a wedding album + prints come in handy.

Reasons Why Wedding Photography Is Important To Your Big Day

You Get Professional Shots Plus Editing

Everyone can take photographs, but their quality will not be as good as a trained wedding photographer. These photographers have experienced, and most of them do this out of their passion for the art. They also have quality photography equipment. They will come with a range of sophisticated cameras, lenses, and lighting to produce that quality shot at just the right timing and setting.

You will not end up with blurred shots, awkward photobombs, poor lighting, or missing events. Instead, every detail about your wedding day will be documented perfectly.

It Documents Your Wedding

A wedding is an emotional day filled with laughter and tears of joy. It is a day that proves true love exists. The two lovebirds will finally make their dreams come true. Unfortunately, you only get married once, not unless you divorce and remarry. Marriage is not easy. It would help if you had a reminder of the day you said your vows and exchanged rings. These photographs are essential since people tend to forget they got married because they were in love. With a wedding photographer, you are sure to get the best memories of your special day. You will share these memories with your kids and your grandkids to come.

Wedding Photographers Are Creative and Organized

Photography is an art that needs a creative person to bring out the best shots. Gone are the days where couples and other guests had to pose to take perfect wedding pictures. Wedding photographers are creative and organized in that they will continuously take shots throughout the wedding session. Most weddings have the bride in white and the groom in black. The odds of your pictures looking like another couple is high. Hiring a professional photographer is a smart move. You want to document this special event and get unique and memorable shots full of emotions.

You Can Rely On Your Photographer

When you book a photographer for the whole day, then you get what you asked for. They do exactly what they were paid for. You will not have an hour of pictures or footage missing. Having missed footage of this special day can be heartbreaking, especially for the first kiss and dance. Professional wedding photographers have an unmatched dedication; most can stay the whole day without eating or visiting the restroom. Having a friend take your wedding photos can be affordable, but you will not be guaranteed this level of results and dedication.

Not So Obvious Reasons Why Wedding Photos Are Important

You may think that the importance of your wedding ceremony is the biggest reason to have lots of pictures, but this isn’t necessarily the case. While the wedding itself is undoubtedly essential, there are other factors as well.

It’s A Snapshot Of Time

Wedding photos capture the bride and groom at the moment in time when they look amazing, glowing and happy. These shots capture not just the day but the mood, style, and individuality of the couple. They are a part of who the couple is and what they are like. This is why it’s so important to capture the little details and the big ones. Capture elements that you might not think to catch. Think of the wedding photos as a sort of time capsule. These pictures will be looked back on for years to come, so get creative!

Family Photos

As much as the wedding is about the bride and groom, it’s also about family and friends. In many cases, a wedding is one of the few times that family will be together, in one place. Therefore, the opportunities for multi-generational photos are present and should be taken advantage of. There may not be other opportunities!

Always be sure to take lots of photos of grandparents and aunts, uncles and cousins. There may be people coming from out of town or even out of the country! Don’t forget to get shots of the kids, too. One day, you’ll be attending their weddings!

While you should strive to keep wedding photos classic and timeless, it’s always nice to capture some shots incorporating pop culture and giving a sense of time. These types of shots are great for nostalgia. People at weddings are generally dressed up and looking their best, so be sure to get plenty of shots of that! This may be the only time in his life that cousin Dave will be wearing a tie, so don’t miss it!

DIY Wedding Ideas

Getting all the best shots at your wedding requires some planning and coordination. If you have a professional photographer, they will be sure to capture the bride and groom, bridal party and immediate family. The photographer will take a series of formal, posed photos of the family, including grandparents, siblings, parents, etc.

It’s essential, though, not to leave family photos to the photographer. There is only so much time, and as nice as formal portraits are, they aren’t always the best shots taken at a wedding!

Help things along by scouting out and designating a spot to take photos. This isn’t a booth, per se, but more of a photo-worthy area to get shots with an excellent background and lighting. Encourage people to take lots of pictures of each other, and find a way to ensure shots are shared with the bride and groom.

Again, it’s so important to capture multi-generational photos throughout the day. Get pictures of grandparents and grandbabies. Moms and daughters, siblings and cousins.

Friends And Faraway Family

There may be family visiting from afar. These family members may not be particularly close, but it’s still important to capture them. Think of your wedding day as a historic date. It’s essential to capture those attending and record what’s going on in people’s lives and the world at large during the event. Your wedding provides a snapshot of what was going on at the time.

Video is another great way to capture the mood and importance of the event. Interview family members, and ask friends to share their favourite memories of the bride and groom.

Another fun idea is a wedding slideshow. This is often a side-by-side compilation of the bride and groom growing up, dating each other and eventually proposing. This is an excellent reason to get engagement photos! The wedding slideshow is a moving journey that each takes to get to where they are now.

Wedding photos aren’t just pretty pictures of the bride and groom dressed up and looking amazing; they are a part of your family history. Years later, you’ll look back at the photos and see how much people have changed. Children have grown up, your friends have gone on to marry and have kids, parents have aged, and grandparents have passed on. Think of your wedding photos as a time capsule, showing a unique moment in time that captures special moments of love between you and your loved ones.

Be sure to take as many photos and as much video as possible. It can be edited later. Talk to people and ask questions. Take photos of what’s essential, and take some photos of random things that may not seem important now but will later. A picture of the vehicle you’ll be leaving in is a snapshot of the times that will be surprisingly nostalgic in 20 or 30 years!

What are the essential wedding photos?

That raises another issue: what should you have in your wedding album?

The key to a fantastic wedding photo album is to include all those precious moments and details.

We are all different people. What’s unique to one may mean little to another. So, feel free to focus on whatever moments you think are essential to capture. Then, be sure to discuss these with your wedding photographer.

Here are some wedding photos most people will not want to miss:

  • Number one, the bride getting ready. For many brides, this is a special moment. They will want to keep memories of their loved ones, helping them put on that unique dress they may have dreamed of since they were little girls. The dress that will turn a bride into a showstopper.
  • Then comes the ceremony. Those moments when the doors swing open and the bride enters, everyone stands up, and the bride walks down the aisle.
  • And, of course, that first look when the groom’s eyes meet the bride’s. One of the most emotional moments of most weddings.
  • The moment when you exchange vows + rings.
  • When you are pronounced husband and wife.
  • That particular moment whereas bride + groom you share your first kiss.
  • Finally, the bliss you two share immediately following your ceremony when you walk back down the same aisle as husband and wife.

You should aim to book your wedding photographer as soon as you can. If you want a great photographer and place high importance on wedding photography for your wedding day, book a wedding photographer as early as one year in advance.

So what are you waiting for? The clock is ticking, you have a lot to do, and we hope we can help you plan your perfect wedding along the way.
