I became a celebrant after attending a friend’s wedding. As I sat there watching the ceremony, I couldn’t help but feel that something wasn’t right. Yes, the ceremony was legal and well conducted, but I knew my friend, and this wasn’t right for her. She is boisterous, confident and has a belly laugh that would shake a continent. The ceremony just didn’t reflect her or her husband’s personalities.

It was at that moment that I made the commitment to become a celebrant. I am all of the things you need if you are looking for a ‘jolly good’ ceremony to kick your day off with a bang! It’s important to me that your ceremony reflects you as a couple and everything we do up to the big day will reflect this.

Let’s meet, and we’ll get down to the first order of business: what you want for your day, and how I can make that happen for you.

It’s hard to find the right person to spend the rest of your life with, so when you finally do, you want to make sure the day you make that public commitment together is special. I reckon that’s an event worth celebrating and doing it right. And I’d love to help you do that: I’ll work with you to put together a ceremony that acknowledges your relationship, honours the significance of the day, but most importantly is memorable and fun.

We’ll start planning your ceremony. Things you’ll need to consider:

• Number of people, how many groomsmen and bridesmaids? Will we need a PA if it’s a large crowd (yes, I have a PA system available)
• Location – indoors or outdoors. If outdoors, do you have a Plan B in case the weather turns?
• What style ceremony did you have in mind: have you seen something you’d like to do?
• Structure of the ceremony: how long would like the ceremony to last – too short and it’ll seem a blur, too long and people may wonder if it’ll ever end.
• Starting thinking about music, reading or poetry that you’d like featured on the day.
• Are there special people you’d like to be part of the ceremony as readers, witnesses or performers?
• Do you want to involve children in the ceremony?

Choosing the right celebrant for your special day is very important. You need someone who will guide you through the process of getting married, firstly starting with the paperwork.

To help your planning, I would love to:

• Meet you and your fiance in the comfort of your own home as I am happy to travel to discover what you wish for your wedding day!
• Provide you with copies of wedding ceremonies, so you know what goes into a ceremony, then help to prepare yours. I have copies of readings that you may like to include and other rituals that you may like to incorporate.
• Send you drafts of the ceremony so you can make any changes you see fit before finalising your ceremony.
• Conduct a rehearsal at the site of your wedding in order to practice the arrival of the bridal/wedding party so that everything runs smoothly on your wedding day.

I have an excellent presentation style and will ensure everyone is able to hear the ceremony. I am flexible and can conduct formal and relaxed wedding ceremonies – the choice is yours. I am culturally sensitive and have conducted weddings for many people coming from different nationalities.

I have conducted weddings in many locations including Werribee Park, Ripponlea, the Dandenong’s, Yarra Valley, the Mornington Peninsula, Geelong and the Belarine Peninsula, a launch on the Yarra, on stage at the Athenaeum Theatre, parks, private homes and beaches. Getting married doesn’t have to cost you $65,000 and upwards. It can cost you as little as $300, or over $100,000. It just depends on what you want from your wedding.

Most Celebrants these days charge between $800 – $1600 to write and deliver a customised wedding ceremony. There are some that charge less, there are some that cost more, it just depends on what you’re looking for. When you look at that number, some people think it’s a high price for what we do. But it really isn’t.

As an Authorised Marriage Celebrant, I will work with you to create a ceremony that tries to encapsulate the best of you and your partner. I will talk with you to find out what you’re looking for, what you’re NOT looking for and from there creating something that is perfect for you. I will consult with you on the music, discuss with you if you’re looking for readings, advise you on your personal vows if you’re unsure. On the day your ceremony will generally go for 15 – 30 minutes (depending of course how much you want in it!) but what you will get for your money is a lifetime worth of memories. Hope you will consider my quote and take up the opportunity to have a free, no obligation chat. This will ensure we get to know each other and see if we are the right fit for each other. For a full ‘Show Stopper’ ceremony, my fees currently start at $900.00 inclusive of GST.

All in all, each ceremony I create will normally take around 20 hours to craft, prepare (from first meeting to the final draft) and deliver. It’s a substantial amount of time. But it’s a really great job to have.

…WHAT ABOUT A “LEGALS ONLY” CEREMONY?

But if you’re not looking to have a wedding ceremony and would rather have a cheaper, registry style wedding without the stuffy rooms and vibes, we can do that too. It’ll still take 5 – 10 minutes, but it can be held anywhere – in your favourite bar, outside in a park, on the beach or even in bed wearing your fav PJs with a nice bottle of bubbles.

For a legal only ceremony, I charge $450 for a ceremony in the city of Melbourne and neighbouring suburbs. Once out of the CBD an extra charge will be added. Imagine that, a small, simple wedding, at your bar or restaurant or another place of choice, just you, your partner and two witnesses. No muss, no fuss. No Bridezilla/Groomzilla vibes, no-one telling you what you should be doing. Just two people getting married.

Your wedding day doesn’t have to be the most expensive day of your life. But as it’s one of the most memorable days you’ll have I do recommend that people invest in a day that represents themselves and their relationships as best as possible

I love weddings; when done right, it is the most fun someone can have, that’s a fact (maybe). I have been to heaps of them, both as a spectator and professionally (I even like them so much I got married myself!).

I have a really simple approach to the ceremonies I put together;

1. Modern: We have all sat through an “old school” ceremony that goes for 3 hours; it’s tough to work. I specialise in modern, casual and fun ceremonies. If you want a Pope Francis style ceremony, I am probably not your guy.
2. Funny: Just like life, weddings should have lots of funny moments. I want you and your guests to laugh. I was a stand up comic in Melbourne for several years, so I am happy to chuck in a few jokes when appropriate! But don’t worry, the chuckles will be balanced out with the beautiful and sentimental moments of your story as a couple (awwwwww).
3. Memorable: Most of all, I don’t want your guests thinking “could I get away with checking the footy scores”. I want your ceremony to be entertaining; I want it to tell the story of you so well that they have no choice but to be as present as Tibetan monks!

Although it’s not hard to find somebody authorised to conduct marriages, it’s harder to find someone that you connect with, and who will ensure you remember your ceremony for all the right reasons.

I am a very experienced celebrant, and in 2014, ’15, ’16, ’17 and ’18 I was awarded the honour of being recognised as Victoria’s best male celebrant by the Australian Bridal Industry Academy. In 2018 I was voted Australia’s best male celebrant.
